With a recent population decline as high as 65% in Ontario, Barn Swallows are now listed as threatened on the Species at Risk list. One of the major factors leading to their decline is habitat loss and lack of adequate nesting sites.

Barn Swallows typically gain access to old wooden barns, sheds, and boathouses and construct their mud nests in the rafters of these buildings. These old wooden buildings are being replaced with modern metal structures that are completely sealed, denying the Swallows access to their rafters for nesting.

If you or someone you know has Barn Swallows on your property, consider adding a Barn Swallow nest platform to provide them an adequate place to build a nest and raise their brood. Providing nest sites is one way we can help this threatened species rebound.

I have constructed these special nesting platforms designed specifically for Barn Swallows. The 2.5″ wide ledge provides plenty of room for the Swallows to construct their nest but is narrow enough to prevent other birds that nest on a platform such as the American Robin or Mourning Dove from occupying them. These platforms measure 11″H x 7.25″W x 3.25″D and are constructed from Eastern White Pine. Simply mount to any vertical surface using two screws.
